New York Fashion Week, Look 1 - Red, Red Wine

L.A.M.B AW12 / Lela Rose AW12

As it's Valentines I thought I would kick off my New York Fashion Week review with a little bit of red.  Love, passion and all things deep, full on romance are all over the runways this year.  Use of the colour varied - but the constant remained.  L.A.M.B (above), Rag and Bone and Alexander Wang continued the 'power theme' in so many collections with red - using it to highlight the sharp tailoring, with lots of slick cuts and leather buckles....  Wang's look being the most in-your-face - those face guards!?  See below...

Rag and Bone AW12 / Peter Som AW12

Rag and Bone AW12

Rag and Bone's collection is one of my favourite my far - English tailoring really does show itself well with this pair.  Have a peek at the full collection.  I love a good tweed box jacket (above) and the Rag and Bone show were full of them.  This house are so, so good at layering without looking lumpy.  They went for brighter shades of the red - in almost a patriotic manner.  Pretty sure I can spot some Scottish influences in the skirt fastens and military straps... Is tartan gradually seeping back in?  I'd imagine London will show us.

Alexander Wang AW12 /  Jenny Packham AW12

Derek Lam AW12 / Helmut Lang AW12

Derek Lam and Tommy Hilfiger used the colour in their all over leather looks (above and below).  Very, very striking and not for the weak hearted.  Over all, red paints the pictures of complete extravagance - NYFW did hold back, AW12 is going to be expensive.

Diane Von Furstenberg AW12 / DKNY AW12

Diane Von Furstenberg, Lela Rose, Jenny Packham and Peter Som went for more of a traditional look for the colour - with flowing silks and lots of embellishments.  Tommy Hilfiger continued the silk-scarf look (below) with Hermes-like prints in blood red.  Glamour to the absolute max - I'd imagine we'll see a lot of looks like these on the red carpets too.  Peter Som, and DKNY also died their fur pieces burgundy (which apparently is harder than any other fabric to dye red) for a truly opulent look.

Rebecca Minkoff AW12 / Rebecca Minkoff AW12

Rebecca Minkoff and Tommy Hilfiger gave the high street some good clues to help them replicate the look for their buyers, with simple stand-out pieces in their collections such as the trouser and office-suitable-dresses above and below.

Victoria Beckham's pea coat (another look to watch out for) started the wine red outerwear trend, with Tommy Hilfiger following suit later in the week.. Overall, it looks like your going to need to buy into the colour in order to 'fit' into AW12... And probably get a pair of reddish leather boots... Feeling a lot better about my bold purchase from Reiss last month now - sound investment.

Beautiful selection of red looks. I also loved the red (and bright pink) at Thakoon! And the boots at Victoria Beckham ('sporty' styling with socks included) are so nice...
