Barnsley House

Followers of my Instagram will know we spent a lovely couple of days in the Cotswolds at Barnsley House. We stayed at The Painswick last year, so we already knew about the Calcot Collection (there are five or six properties across the country of similar style) and we'd had a brilliant time - so were expecting lots from our mini break. We arrived to perfect sunshine and after a game of croquet (could it be in any more English?) and an Aperol Spirtz we decided we'd take a walk around the grounds - with me in my fancy-pants new dress.

When it comes to occasion dressing I'm still finding my feet. I read a thing in the paper recently where the journalist talks about it being really difficult not to lose your identity when dressing for something like a wedding. Your usual style rules go out of the window and you're focussed on looking appropriate, and not wearing the same colour as the bridesmaids...

Often the event itself creeps up on you from nowhere despite RSVP'ing 6 months before, and you're struck with needing to look good without having hit the gym (but hit all the bagels) and you're not really up for showing your body off. That's where dresses like this come in; sleeved, delicate, patterned (hides champagne spillages = plus) and a flattering neckline.

I spotted it at Hobbs when I went to meet the team (I think I even Instagrammed it there and then) and knew it had to be mine. When they told me I could select something to take home, I made an immediate beeline for it. I'm going to be doing a project with them this month and I'm VERY excited about it. It's a lovely fit as the company was founded in Hampstead (where we live) and I think it's got a lot going for it as a brand, and doesn't get the attention it deserves.

So, a little more about our weekend venue Barnsley House. We absolutely loved it, the room we had had two free standing roll top baths (we may have ordered room service and watched Game of Thrones from them...) and the gardens are just gorgeous. We really, really recommend it for a weekend away. The majority of the property is Lopez friendly too (do check which rooms), so he darted about the gardens (on a lead, as the hotel asked me to stress) making friends with everyone while we let our shoulder drop taking in the country air.

Located in the heart of the Cotswolds, and easy to get to from London (just over an hour on the train, and they'll collect you from the station if you give them warning) Barnsley House is brilliant for a bit of TLC. It has a little spa with Elemis treatments (fast becoming a favourite) and outdoor jet poured hot pools. We were very lucky with the weather and sat outside on the loungers for an afternoon but I can imagine it being magical in winter as they have a resting-room with floor to ceiling glass, comfy throws and a big log burner.

Food wise we weren't very adventurous and ate in the hotel restaurant on the first night; I inhaled a beef wellington (do make a point of saying you want it well cooked unless you're into rare meat) and Gus had some homemade pasta which looked amazing. The following evening we went over the road to the pub and had a brilliant steak and chips. The manager's of both places went out of their way to accommodate us, even giving Lopez little portions of meat on the sly**...

Thank you very much to Barnsley House (who gave us one of our two nights stay in return for a blog post) for making our anniversary a one to remember. I'll be coming back to those baths and those breakfasts (the build your own granola bowls were amazing) as soon as possible! Find out more about the hotel, here.

**we sat outside, dogs cannot sit in the restaurant though a very friendly reception team will keep an eye on them whilst you eat
