Alexa Chung at SS13 Fashion Week / Zooey Deschanel in her J Crew Pea Coat
Today is my birthday! I'm not really sure what the plan is, birthdays mid week are always a little bit boring. Last night Sarah and I went to the LK Bennett bloggers' launch in Cavendish Square, followed by the lovely team at Goodley PR's Vestiaire Collective event. We were completely spoilt, with lots of goodies which we will no doubt both blog about soon. We also discovered the amazing Belgraves Hotel (and ate way too many canapes)... Any way, enough gloating!
One look I absolutely love for this season (I always feel like I sound like a total w#nker when I use that expression) is the military thing - mainly the coats. There are quite a few green coloured ones around, but my favourite are the navy with the gold buttons. We all know who did it first, the Duchess wowed the crowds back in 2011 with her Alexander McQueen masterpiece (which has sold out everywhere, but this Joseph one ticks all the right boxes for £550. But I prefer the slightly more ruffled look with the style (like Alexa and Zooey in the first pictures) boyfriend jeans or skirts, tees, knits and flats rather than wearing it as formalwear.
Unsurprisingly the heritage brands come out in force for a piece like this, but it's easy to be taken in by a cheap price tag. I'm a big stickler for investing in coats - if you pay peanuts you'll get monkeys. Fabrics that keep the shape up and the cold out aren't cheap. Saying that, a few surprises contenders appeared when I was having a poke around for a good version. Sadly, the Joseph coat is never going to happen at the moment! I love the shorter styled types like the Jigsaw one above, and the one from Mango (which sold out in all their stores but is still available via John Lewis). I'm hoping the birthday magic fairies are reading this and will deliver something special to my door. Worth a try!
