This look has been stewing for a while: pencil skirts were very big last year and as time went on they become all the more lacy, bright and bold. Statement/heavily patterned skirts are a massive look for SS12, and really do help make the pencil skirt all the more wearable. With the busy patterns and centre-eye-drawing designs, even the most self conscious can deck themselves out in one of these lovely pieces.
This look can be as daring or as timid as you like, you just need to make sure you are wearing a patterned pencil skirt. There are loads of different styles around, going from the bold (like the Peter Pilotto skirt above) to digital prints and pastels like the Preen one above. The main things are that the skirt needs to be high waisted and finish below the knee. Aside from that, the world is your fashion oyster. Any print will do.
I absolutely love this skirt on the left, from Topshop. The print reminds me of the Isabel Marant print she did last year (the one that looked a bit like the X Factor logo). It's a bit unusual for me to like something so bold - I am all about the greys and camel coloured pieces - but this one is fab. And having tried it on, it is super comfortable. It won't break the bank either. Buy it here for a bargain £28.00.
Love this Warehouse one too - ornamental print will be big this season thanks to Mary Katrantzou and Stella McCartney. The black background makes it almost office worth too! Not too bright either - perfect for any timid fashionista. Buy it here for £45.00.
I completely understand that people might be hesitant to wear one of these because they can be a little unflattering on wider or shorter frames. One word of warning, pencil skirt will shorten you - so always wear with a heel. Even if you are tall naturally, I reckon you need a kitten heel of some kind. I saw someone wearing one on the way to work yesterday with a pair of (very nice) flats - looked awful, and seemed to cut off the elegance of the whole look. Anyway, back to a view gems I found.
As all the pictures show too, you really don't need to wear anything showy with a piece like this - a tee or a plain shirt lets the skirt do all the talking :) This would also be a great piece to pair up your sheer shirt with, as I blogged about earlier in the week.
My favourite piece is the below one from H&M. So cool - not sure how else to describe it. I saw it in store and the quality is amazing for £29.99. Love the mix of colour; blacks with pastels and pop of burnt orange. Not sure it is possible to find a piece more 'on trend' than this. Call me a fashion victim, but I'm in love... Buy it here.
