New York Fashion Week, Look 3 - All White Long

BCBG Max Azria / Carmen Marc Valvo AW12

Another little look that featured over the runways: White.  All white to be precise - except for footwear which was a different colour in every single collection (black for BCBG Max Azria and gold at Derek Lam).  Whereas the colour being paired with brights in 2011, we are now firmly back in solo-colour territory.  It was used as a blank canvas to highlight texture (like in this dress by Carman Amac Valvo) and skill - the sharpness and design of collections really did seem to stand out so much more.  Also interestingly (fact for the day) - white is the most difficult colour to produce from a manufacturing point of view, and the most expensive - fitting in nicely with the downright opulence of so many other looks at NYFW.

Alexander Wang AW12

Alexander Wang used the colour to strike into their gangster theme (used for their entire collection).  Without going to deep, the idea of the 'white' is to create a stark contrast to the strength/suggested force in the structure of the clothes themselves.  Not too sure about the face guards, but I am loving the sharp tailoring (note the black army boots - these were everywhere). Cigarette/pencil trousers were in a lot of shows too... I guess that continues the theme of power/authority that seemed to form a backdrop for many collections - something a little 'high powered' or military about them...

Derek Lam AW12

With the opposite idea to Alexander Wang, Derek Lam's collection also had a few all white outfits - but to demonstrate softness and light/fluffy feelings - love these gold shoes too.  Very much all about the texture - mixing fabrics such as crepe and furs.  Icy white with a massive lean on all things luxurious and soft on the skin.  Really like the sleeveless wool jumpers too, noticed these at quite a few shows.

Helmut Lang AW12 / Peter Som AW12

Cigarette/pencil trousers were in a lot of shows too... I guess that continues the theme of power/authority that seemed to form a backdrop for many collections - something a little 'high powered' or military about them.  My favourites were at Helmut Lang and Proenza Schouler.

Rachel Comey AW12

Rachel Comey and Helmut Lang were the ones who kept their looks close to AW11 - firmly tailored with a hint of androgyny (think Jil Sander SS11).   White shirts are going to be very, very useful in 2012...  You might also notice that hair is always back from the face and million miles from the waivy loose sun-kissed hair of last year...

Peter Som AW12 / Tess Giberson AW12

White really doesn't have to be dull - love the sharp shoulders and peplum in these two shots.  Tess Giberson is definitely a name to watch - her borderline bondage stuff is right up many a fashion editor's street - I'm sure McQueen in Paris will have a come back to this!  The sheer of silk was used a lot in white outfits to break up the colour, and it makes the luxury of the fabric all the more noticeable.

Tess Giberson AW12 / Zac Posen AW12

Tess Giberson AW12 / Zac Posen AW12

Grouped these two shots together to show how designers paired the look with metallics - silver on the left and gold on the right.  Something very Elie Saab and Ralph Lauren about these two looks.  Long pieces were a favourite, but not oversize so much - fitted at the waist and shoulder but full length.  You'll still need your metallics from AW11 for next year by the looks of things - good news.

Other 'whites' to check out: J Mendel, Proenza Schouler.
