New York Fashion Week, Look 2 - Back to Black

Victoria Beckham AW12

One look that it really didn't take rocket science to notice was the abundance of black in the collections in New York.  So many collections worked a 'fierce up' a look (like Alexander Wang, Prabal Gurung, Victoria Beckham and Jason Wu) who's collections were positively 'gangsta' in parts with face guards and lots of military themes - caps/hats, trench boots (like Victoria Beckham's above)double breasted jackets and hooked shoulders.  You'll need texture and layers - this is pure opulence.

I am in love with the gothic themes featured in a few collections (like Prabal Gurung above).  The mix of the delicate lace with the strong make up and fierce outerwear makes AW11 attempt at the look appear rather feeble...  However, despite the layers, luxury and textures there were some great simple outfits from all the collections - you're going to need to become friends with a little black dress for winter this year...

Loved the borderline bondage hints in a few collections, particularly Altuzarra... Check out those boots...  This collection was gorgeous (check out the whole thing here) - it pinpointed a few things you are going to need.  Your tribal, oversize jewellery from the summer can be reused (yay) as in the outfit below - tribal will stay in.  And white shirts remain to be a true capsule piece... And the Tommy Hilfiger team did the same thing with pops of deep colours around a general military black vibe.

Last season, black was used to enhance the androgynous look - this year it's the total opposite with full skirts, elegant necklines and delicate cuts - contrasting the army-style behind collections.  Feminity is key to AW12 - yay, but in a new way - women need to look 'Pretty Powerful'!  Lots of the collections seemed to have the Parisian influence in the same manner - monochrome masterpieces remembering the female form.  Jason Wu demonstrated this perfectly - with lots of layers (tick for opulent luxury) nipped in at the waist, with lace and leather mixed in.  And now for my favourite collection (below) Diane Von Furstenberg...

Luxury was key - with furs and sparkle continuing to feature.  Buying a leather jacket in 2012 also seems like a worthy investment (or just leather in general) - it featured in over 60% of all collections (and when 10% of shows in New York don't use animal products, that's quite a chunk of the industry).  In conclusion - we finally have an excuse to live in black.
