[Essential] Trench Coat

Next up in my essentials series, I continue the coat theme.  Bloody love a good trench coat, but am a complete snob about them.  They need to be expensive, and they have to be British.  This fashion piece carries so much heritage, it would be wrong to buy one from anywhere else.

Invented in 1850, Aquascutum created the renown cream fabric - the first waterproof fabric of it's kind (hence the name, aqua scutum means water-shield in Latin), Thomas Burberry then pinched the idea and patented it as part of the British Army uniform in 1901.  In the 1920s, after huge legal disputes it was finally decided that Aquascutum are the brains behind the coat - and the patent was removed. Cue, thousands of replicas from mainstream fashion houses.

This piece is something every girl needs to have to have a complete coat wardrobe.  Perfect for British weather, and like the camel cashmere coat (see my Essentials page).  I've found these pictures on pinterest which show how often you can wear it, and how versatile it is.

Where to buy your trench coat:

There are only two places a true Brit should buy her Trench (invest, don't high street this purchase).  And buy a classic - don't be tempted by the studs and leather arms that go in and out of trend. You want to wear this for life:

Aquascutum - the inventor of the trench, this British fashion house's quality really is second to none.  Plus, in my opinion the Burberry check is a little bit overdone.  They have a few styles, mine is the 'Jennifer.'
Burberry - saying that, Burberry is the epitome of British style and internationals queue for hours to get their hands on one...

Good day!

I've never really considered a trench coat, however, now, I shall! Is that you in the top photo? I like that trench alot.
I wonder if its too late to add one as a P.S to the bottom of my letter to Santa.

Thank you for this! I've been wanting to invest in a good one, but I abhor the Burberry print. I'll definitely check out Aquascutum.

Love a good trench- very British! And to answer your question, I'm not British but I do love all things British, including my corgi and Princess Kate! Happy Holidays!

Great article.

Please could you tell me the name of the trench coat that is in the top picture?

It is a picture of a girl wearing a beige colour trench which has dark buttons that are placed close togehter and the model has golden blonde hair.

This is a lovely coat but it's not Aquascutum as I've looked at all their styles and they don't have one like this.
